(KYMA, KECY / CNN) – Preliminary data from the CDC released on Wednesday shows a record number of people have died from drug overdoses in the past year.
According to the agency’s estimated preliminary numbers, there were more than 92,000 deaths from overdose in the 12 months ended November 2020. This is the highest number since the CDC began tracking these statistics in 1999.
In general, the number of deaths from overdose has increased over the past two decades, nearly doubling between 2010 and 2018, and experts say the trend has been accelerated by the increasing use and abuse of opioid pain relievers.
Synthetic opioids like fentanyl continue to be the main driver.
