Heart attack? killer Drug overdose or all three? Now CBI will find out
CM Sawant decides to hand over Sonali Phogat murder case to the CBI. Why? Because of ‘rising demand’; Home Ministry grants consent for a CBI probe
PANJIM: On Sunday the informal but highly followed “Khap panchayat” of Tik Tok star and BJP member Sonali Phogat’s village demanded a CBI inquiry. Less than 24 hours later, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant decided to recommend the case to the CBI, and out of his police’s hands.
The Union Home Ministry has granted its consent to the CBI to take over the further investigation into the alleged murder case of BJP leader Phogat.
The Phogat’s family members and the Haryana government have been making persistent demands for the same. The family members had said that they are not happy with the police investigation and demanded a CBI inquiry. The family members had even threatened to approach the High Court for necessary directions.
The approval comes hours after Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that he would write to MHA to transfer the case to CBI as demanded by her family members and villagers.
Last month, this BJP member from Hisar in Haryana, Sonali Phogat died under suspicious circumstances in Goa. After initially registering a case of natural death, police added a murder section and arrested four persons including two of Phogat’s associates.
On Sunday, the Khap Mahapanchayat held in Hisar village in Haryana demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.
Earlier in the day, speaking to reporters Sawant said the State Police have done a “tremendously good” investigation in the case and also have got some clues.
However, he said there is continuous demand from Haryana locals and also from Phogat’s daughter that the CBI should conduct the investigation.
“Goa Police are doing a very good job and I have full faith in them. But owing to rising demand, we have decided to write to the Union Home Ministry to hand over this case to CBI,” Sawant said.
A team of Goa Police had visited Haryana last week to conduct further investigation into the case.
The politicians on Monday reacted sharply to the government’s decision to hand over the investigations of BJP leader Sonali Phogat to the CBI.
Condemning the government’s decision, former Advocate General and Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira said, “Does it mean Goa Police are incompetent, not doing their job and inefficient in handling the case? It is the indictment of Anjuna Police and higher officers. I feel Chief Minister was pressured by BJP higher ups to hand over the probe to CBIs and Chief Minister buckled overnight. Chief Minister should give an explanation.”
Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Deputy Leader Sankalp Amonkar said, “It was total failure of the government handing over Sonali Phogat murder case to CBI. Goa Police are capable of investigating the case but Chief Minister showed no faith in them and succumbed to BJP’s higher ups and to the threat of the Khap Mahapanchayat.”
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) State convenor Adv Amit Palekar said, “Handing over Sonali Phogat death investigations to CBI shows that the government is not trusting its own police. Sonali’s family and Haryana Chief Minister wanted CBI probe and Chief Minister agreed to it when Goa Police were capable of investigating it.”
